Killed in action, at Oshakati after Operation Protea, crashed whilst bringing in casualties at night, in Aerospatiale SA330L Puma C #174. It is said that Lamprecht was disorientated and guided the pilot incorrectly, thus the tail rotor caught in a barb-wire fence. Sgt Lamprecht (Flight Engineer), the co-pilot, Lt D O'Connor, several medics and a doctor as well as the casualty, tragically died. Only the pilot survived

Was this not Doctor Bartie who died in the Puma when it crashed while landing at the hospital in Oshakhati? The chopper drifted into a fence while hovering, killing all onboard except the pilot. This incident took place at night when the team was doing a casevac run from Ondangwa Air Base. I remember Lieutenant Bartie from my time there, a most delightful man with a large moustache! I was an eyewitness to this accident.
Yes it was my husband. I was fortunate to visit him at Ondangua for a week and left on the afternoon just before the accident. Cecil George Bartie and his sister Pauline lived accross the street from us when we were at school in Normandie Avenue in Bayswater in Bloemfontein for a number of years. I can still remember the shock when I heard about his death. i can so remember his mom, tannie Alta Bartie and his dad also Cecil. What a guy!! I would so love to have a cup of coffee with his wife to share some of these memories..... I just sat here tonnight and remembered him and thought ... let me google his name....
29 Sep 1981: Two helicopter crewmen from 19 Squadron and four members of the SADF including a Medical Doctor were Killed in Action during Operation Protea when Aerospatiale SA330L Puma, Serial No.174 crashed at Oshakati while bringing in casualties at night. It is suspected that the Pilot, Major Johannes Jacobus Vogel got disorientated in a brown-out situation causing the tail rotor to connect with a barb-wire fence. Sole survivor of this incident was Major Johannes Jacobus Vogel from 19 Sqn (Pilot & Aircraft Commander). As far as it is known, he never flew again.
