Jordan, Royal Durban Light Infantry WWII Roll of Honour ("working document", Aug 2026 draft; email to John & Bobby, 4 Sep 2026, marked "not 100% correct") (matched by exact ServiceNo 6884 and exact DateDeath 28 Nov 1942; Regiment filled as South African Engineer Corps and Age as 43, both blank -- also commemorated on the RDLI WWII Memorial per this source, despite not serving in it; his brother Ernest Stanford/Stafford Whittal (spelling varies between sources) died in WWI, PersonNumber 28260, already on record): WHITTAL, Clifford Gerald (Son of James & Susanah Alecia (nee Selby) Whitta of Queenstownl; husband of Alice (nee Burr) Whittal of Railway Cottages, Durban; they had a young daughter.) (His brother Ernest Stafford Whittal died in WWI.) 6884 Sapper South African Engineer Corps Born KWT 23/1/1899; married Durban 11/9/1926; a leading shunter with the SAR&H before enlistment; served in North Africa; lost at sea when German submarine U-177 torpedoed and sank S.
