Son of John D'Urban Tyrwhitt-Drake and Laura Sophia Tyrwhitt-Drake, of Howie West, Port Alfred, Cape Colony, South Africa. Served in the Rebellion and German South West Africa. Educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown. Born 23/12/1896. At St Andrew's 1906/7 and again from 1910-1912. Was a fine horseman. When war broke out he joined Cradock Commando and served in the rebellion, then with most of the commando served in German South West Africa in the Midland Horse. At conclusion of the campaign he went to England and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Household Brigade 1916. In 1917 he was reported missing in France and was officially reported killed in January 1918.
