5214 Pte. J. Nieass (some references spell it Neiass), 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, was killed in action at the battle of Elandslaagte 21 October 1899. He is buried at Battleridge Cemetery, Elandslaagte but his grave has no individual marker. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasp Elandslaagte, having already been awarded the India General Service Medal with clasps Punjab Frontier 1897-98 and Tirah 1897-98.
