Son of Margaret Smart, of Woodbine Cottage, Lonmay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and the late William Smart; born King Edward, November 1876; graduated M.A., 1897. After graduation Smart went to South Africa and taught for several years at Wellington. He then became Headmaster at Port Nolloth, Cape Colony, but had to resign owing to ill-health. Later he took up farming. Smart enlisted in the South African Infantry as a Private and served in France until 24 March 1918, when he was reported "missing" and afterwards, "killed in action" in the Gauche Wood region.
