He served with Marshall ?s Horse from November 1899 to December 1900. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in February, Corporal in May and Sergeant in September. He was present at numerous engagements. He was a Lieutenant in the Graaff-Reinet District Mounted Troop during 1901. He was shot and killed by one of his own men who mistook him as one of the enemy on 28 September 1901. According to the Graaff-Reinet Museum the accident occurred near Petersburg while they were on a reconnaissance patrol. Petersburg lies at the foot of Tandjiesberg between Graaff-Reinet and Pearston.
