Son of Adam Young Niven and Gertrude Elizabeth Niven (nee Dodds), of Johannesburg, South Africa. Also served in German West Africa in 1914/1915. Educated from 1908 to 1912 at Hilton College, Natal, and 1913 at Jeppe High School, Johannesburg, Transvaal where he matriculated. He was one of the School's most prominent runners.
