Notes

Son of Julius and Elizabeth Berlein, of Johannesburg, South Africa. Son of a German father, fun-loving Leslie and his brothers would blow their entire term's pocket money on champagne on the train back to boarding school. Adored by his men, who found his body after the first day of the Battle of Loos. After losing two sons in the war, his devastated father never opened the boxes containing their medals, simply instructing that their trunks and belongings be passed down through the generations. His brother also died on service
