Son of Charles and Barbara McDonald, of Newton Dee Cottage, Murtle, Aberdeen, Scotland; husband of Jeanne Simpson McDonald, of 44A, Sixth Avenue, Bezuidenhout Valley, Johannesburg, Transvaal. Served in the South African Campaign. Born in 1878. Served in South Africa during the Boer War with the 1st Gordon Highlanders for a period of 1 year and 46 days in 1901 and 1902 and was discharged in South Africa. He attested with the 3rd S.A.I. in October 1915 and was appointed Sergeant while in the field on 19th June 1916. McDonald died on his way to the dressing station.

LG Sup 9 December 1916 - "In Delville Wood on 15 July 1916 he ably supported L/Cpl Shapcott, and was seriously wounded in the chest (raid by Capt.Tomlinson)"
