Died in accidental shooting with a .22 pistol. He had just come off guard duty at DF Malan Airport and took a pistol from his bag and attempted to shoot a bird. The gun did not fire so he threw it at his friend who tried to catch it but it fired and the bullet hit van der Poel in the mouth. He died on the scene
