LG Sup 20 Oct 1916 pg 10187 - "For conspicuous gallantry in action. When all his senior officers had become casualties, he rallied his men and led them in two fresh attempts to capture the enemy's trench. Finally, he carried his company serjeant-major, who was severely wounded, back to safety. He set a fine example throughout the day."
