Gustav matriculated in 1979 at Hoerskool Upington. We were class mates. He studied at the University of the Free State and was doing a camp with the Regiment University of the Free State at the time of his death, seconded to 61 Mech Bn. He died in a tragic accident at night during operation Askari. I was not present at the time of his death, but saw him a few days before he died. He was a gentle man. He died on 21 December 1983 and must have been 22 years old.
