Ernest Herbert was born in Shipham Somerset, I am not certain when he joined the army, but he certainly sailed on the ship Britain with the 2nd SLI in 1899 and landed at Cape Town, I have seen his SA medal and it has four bars saying he took part in fighting at Tugella Heights Ladysmith and the Cape the last bar I am unable to remember, he died of enteric fever at a temporary hospital just outside of Ladysmith in the Eastern Cape, he lies in a civilien cemertary along with several comrades in Ladysmith, the cemetary is now out of use, but is mentained by several locals I have visited his grave and was very moved by the experience, ernest was my grandfathers elder brother.
