The Southern Rhodesia Auxiliary Air Force (SRAAF) was formed in July 1949 as unpaid volunteer aircrew — mostly Second World War pilots — to man a first operational squadron (Spitfires from 1951). Air-Britain records that it was disbanded in July 1953 when jet Vampires arrived and Air Force HQ decided all aircrew would be regulars.
