Dates Force Role Status
1946-01-01 UDF Infantry, later Armour Permanent Force (Regular)
Formed 1 May 1933 as a youth-employment/training scheme under Minister of Defence Oswald Pirow (not a combat regiment in this period); became an infantry battalion 1941, then an armoured car commando 1942 and part of 11th SA Armoured Brigade (1943), serving with 6th SA Armoured Division in the Middle East and Italy 1943-45. "Resuscitated as a Permanent Force unit" in 1946 -- unlike most of this batch, the SSB is a Regular/Permanent Force unit, not Citizen Force. 2nd Bn became 1 SA Infantry Battalion 1951-53; 1st Bn became a training regiment.
