1 Special Service Battalion (1 SSB), in Afrikaans 1 Spesiale Diens Bataljon (1 SDB), is an armoured regiment of the South African Army and one of only two such regiments in its regular force. It is based at Tempe, near Bloemfontein, and is still serving.

Its lineage runs back to the Special Service Battalion, formed on 1 May 1933 as a youth-employment and training scheme under the Minister of Defence, Oswald Pirow, rather than as a combat regiment. The SSB became an infantry battalion in 1941, an armoured car commando in 1942, and part of 11 South African Armoured Brigade in 1943, serving with 6 South African Armoured Division in the Middle East and Italy in 1943-45. The battle honours Italy 1944-45, Florence, Gothic Line, Celleno, The Greve and Po Valley were earned in that campaign, before any separately numbered 1 SSB existed.

After the Second World War the Special Service Battalion was reorganised into two battalions, one of which is 1 SSB. When the South African Armoured Corps was officially proclaimed in 1946 the Special Service Battalion was included in the corps as its only full-time unit, and its symbols and colours were incorporated into the corps.

1 SSB served in the South African Border War in South West Africa and Angola, holding the battle honours Kunene, South West Africa/Angola 1975-1976, South West Africa/Angola 1976-1989 and Cuito Cuanavale. It did not usually deploy as a whole: it detached squadrons to various battlegroups, among them 63 Mechanised Battalion Group, with which it took part in Operations Merlyn and Agree in 1989. In this period it was equipped with the Eland 60 and Eland 90 armoured cars. More recently it took part in Operation Boleas, the South African intervention in Lesotho in 1998.

For many years it had a sister unit, 2 Special Service Battalion, based at Zeerust, which was disbanded in 1997.

The regiment is now equipped with the Rooikat 76 armoured car and the Ratel 90 and Ratel ZT3, and under Project Hoefyster is to receive the Denel Badger in missile and fire-support variants. Its deployment strength is about 1,000 soldiers. In the draft Vision 2020 force design it is charted as the armoured car regiment of the Armoured Brigade (Free State) within the Mechanised Division.

Its cap badge is a spray of three protea flowers bound by a ribbon bearing the initials and motto; the beret is black; the regimental colours are orange over blue divided by silver, or by white where silver cannot be used. The motto is Eendrag Maakt Mag (Unity is Strength). It is allied to the 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards of the British Army, and holds an annual regimental gathering called the Pantseraksie (Armour Action).

Its Wikipedia article cites this Roll of Honour as the regimental honour roll.

Dates Force Role Status
1933-05-01 – 1945-12-31 UDF Youth training scheme; Infantry from 1941; Armoured Car from 1942 Permanent Force (Regular)
LINEAGE, NOT FOUNDING. No separately numbered 1 SSB existed in this period: the unit was the undivided Special Service Battalion (OrgEntityID 5278), which split after the Second World War. Wikipedia's infobox dates 1 SSB from 1 May 1933 because it carries that lineage, and the Formed date on this record follows it, but a man who died before 1946 belongs to 5278, not here. Formed 1 May 1933 as a youth-employment and training scheme under Minister of Defence Oswald Pirow; infantry battalion 1941; armoured car commando 1942; part of 11 SA Armoured Brigade 1943, serving with 6 SA Armoured Division in the Middle East and Italy 1943-45. The Italian battle honours belong to this period. No man on this roll is attached to 2221 with a death date in these years. Source
1946-01-01 – 1994-04-26 UDF, SADF from 1957 Armour (Armoured Car) Permanent Force (Regular)
Resuscitated as a Permanent Force unit in 1946, when the South African Armoured Corps was officially proclaimed and the Special Service Battalion was included in it as the corps's only full-time unit, its symbols and colours being incorporated. Same lineage as the Special Service Battalion (OrgEntityID 5278); "1 Special Service Battalion" is the specific numbered battalion within that Permanent Force unit.
SOURCE CONFLICT, recorded rather than resolved: the 1 SSB article says the post-war reorganisation produced "1 Special Service Battalion and 1 South African Infantry Battalion", which would make 1 SAI the other battalion from the start. The Special Service Battalion and 2 SSB articles instead have the second battalion carrying the name 2 SSB until 26 January 1951, when it was renamed 1 SAI. The two accounts cannot both be right about when the name 1 SAI appeared. NO OrgEntityAlias is recorded for 2221 on the strength of either.
Border War service falls in this era: South West Africa and Angola, with squadrons detached to battlegroups rather than the regiment deploying whole -- among them 63 Mechanised Battalion Group, on Operations Merlyn and Agree in 1989. Equipped with the Eland 60 and Eland 90. All but three of the men on this roll who point at 2221 died in this period.
The Union Defence Force became the South African Defence Force in 1957, part-way through this era; no man on this roll attached to 2221 died before 1964, so the change affects none of them. Source
1994-04-27 SANDF Armour (Armoured Car) Permanent Force (Regular)
Listed under South African Army Armour (Armoured Car) (Regular) in the SA Army Units navbox, and still serving, based at Tempe near Bloemfontein. Took part in Operation Boleas, the South African intervention in Lesotho, in 1998. Now equipped with the Rooikat 76 and the Ratel 90 and ZT3; under Project Hoefyster it is to receive the Denel Badger in missile and fire-support variants. Deployment strength about 1,000. In the draft Vision 2020 force design it is charted as the armoured car regiment of the Armoured Brigade (Free State), Mechanised Division. Its sister unit 2 SSB (OrgEntityID 2257) was demobilised on 30 August 1997, leaving 1 SSB one of only two full-time armoured regiments in the SA Army. Source
