49155 Lamb to recover a Support Commando call sign that had been operating across the border in the Chimanda Cross Roads area of Moçambique (southern side of Cabora Bassa) when they accidentally flew over an unmarked FRELIMO Camp. Francois went in immediately on the outskirts of the camp. Because of the intense ground fire Nigel couldn't get anywhere close to attempt a recovery so he went on alone picked up the RLI call sign and brought them back to attempt a second rescue attempt. However with the large FRELIMO presence now at the crash site the troops came under intense fire and were unable to get anywhere near the downed helicopter. With last light fast approaching Nigel had no option but to return to the Rhodesian border now grossly overloaded with 8 heavily laden troops and in the dark. Only madmen and Rhodesian pilots would even attempt this! At this stage everyone basically had no option but to write off both aircraft and crew. Further recovery attempts were discounted firstly because all Rhodesian air 82 Rhodesia: Roll of Honour | Prop Geldenhuys effort was needed for a large external planned for the next day and secondly it was believed the enemy having been seen right at the crash site the crew were either dead or if not prisoners and therefore risking further lives was pointless. The next day saw the launch of an attack on the Tembue triangle north of Cabora Bassa which had been the subject of Rhodesian attention on "Operation Snoopy" in November 1977. Like so many of these camp attacks it turned out to be a lemon with only very few ZANLA occupying the camp. History has taught us that this was because the enemy was always forewarned! However with all the aircraft movement to and from Rhodesia to the target area an intermittent signal was picked up on from the emergency transmitter at the now abandoned crash site. 49240 Gough was to assault the North end of Casino but due to the fire power and bunker system we were unable to progress that day. There were numerous Hunter strikes and an extremely brave Lynx Pilot overhead that afternoon. We saw the Lynx dive down towards the North end of Casino to be met by a barrage of AA guns 14∙5 12∙7 and some 20mm type weapons and he was lucky not to be hit. Chris and my troop assaulted the North end the following day. There was no resistance but progress was slow because of bunker clearing and possible booby traps. We finally arrived at the top of Casino at about midday and proceeded to clear the area. There were plus/minus 20 dead Gooks as a result of the air strikes but most had fled during the night. After clearing the North end we went to the South end. Ted Mann who was the radio operator for Chris was standing in the vicinity of another Scout who was using an unexploded 30mm Hunter canon shell as a hammer in an attempt to clear a jammed AR. The shell exploded and blew the hands off the troopie and shrapnel hit various people including myself. Sadly Ted was hit in the chest and despite the fact that the RLI doctor Dr Mills was on hand and on site within 10 minutes Ted died. We moved back to the North end for the night. We heard shells being fired over our position and wrongly assumed the artillery were shelling some position until we were informed by radio that it was probably a tank. Later the following day we left the area and moved back to the Honde Valley and this was the period when the Hunter and Canberra were shot down.” Marunga J.
