21955Lieutenant Cecil Rowe, 102195V, 146 Sqdn. (South African Air Force), aged 25. Killed in action, in Hurricane IIB BG812, spun into ground at Barasat. Aircraft had disintegrated - Lt Rowe took off at 1505 hours to do local cloud flying and did not return. Parts of unknown aircraft found near Barasat at about 2100 hours around a big hole in the ground. Aircraft disintegrated and evidence suggests that it spun in at high speed. Finally identified as Rowe's based on some gun parts. Pilot reported as missing believed killed. No significant remains. Confirmed as killed on 12.3.43. some remains recovered.

32463Corporal Abraham Liebergh Pelser, 72430408BC, 7 South African Infantry Battalion (South African Infantry Corps), aged 21. Died in Freak Accident, some of the troops used to straighten the pins on their hand grenades to make them easier to extract and then hooked the grenades into their webbing via the grenade handle. Unfortunately, when Abraham took off his webbing after returning to Nkurukuru Base from a patrol, his thumb caught on the grenade pin and pulled it out. The armed M26 grenade fell onto the floor in the middle of the tent and without hesitation, he dived onto the grenade and absorbed the full force of the explosion that killed him instantly but saved the lives of all the other soldiers in the tent.

31614Private Allen Alberto Mariano, 84372085BG, 101 Field Workshop (South African Technical Services Corps), aged 19. Died in Freak Accident, while loading a damaged vehicle onto a low-bed, at Omauni in Owamboland. The crane lift chain broke and the vehicle fell onto him, killing him instantly.

Died in Military Vehicle Accident, whilst doing riot patrols in the outskirts of East London. The buffel he was travelling in rolled, killing Mark instantly and injuring several others. None were strapped in.
