Killed in action, Liberator GR.V BZ753, his aircraft and another aircraft were sent out on an anti-submarine patrol. They were attacked by six JU88s. The other aircraft sought the protection of the clouds but Melville decided to fight it out.

11550Private Francis Major Joseph, 23181V, Imperial Light Horse/Kimberley Regiment, S.A.Forces, aged 29. Killed in action, during an enemy counter attack on the houses at Torlai. After the platoons were withdrawn from the area, they could still hear the Bren gun firing and grenade explosions. These ceased at about 0500 on the morning of the 5th October. Daylight revealed Pte. Joseph’s body next to his Bren as it was he that had been firing to the end.
