Josephâ€™s body next to his Bren as it was he that had been firing to the end.

Killed in action, Liberator GR.V BZ753, his aircraft and another aircraft were sent out on an anti-submarine patrol. They were attacked by six JU88s. The other aircraft sought the protection of the clouds but Melville decided to fight it out.

- 1944 7682 — Sergeant George Wilfred Friedman, 38277V, Imperial Light Horse/Kimberley Regiment, S.A.Forces, aged 28. Killed in action, while busy with house clearance in Torlai. He was hit by machine gun fire.

- 1944 10248 — Lieutenant Thomas John Cecil Hopkins, 314347V, 1 Sqdn. (South African Air Force), aged 23. Killed in action, burst into flames in bombing dive 10 miles South of Bologna, in Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX #MA425.

- 1944 11550 — Private Francis Major Joseph, 23181V, Imperial Light Horse/Kimberley Regiment, S.A.Forces, aged 29. Killed in action, during an enemy counter attack on the houses at Torlai. After the platoons were withdrawn from the area, they could still hear the Bren gun firing and grenade explosions. These ceased at about 0500 on the morning of the 5th October. Daylight revealed Pte. Josephâ€™s body next to his Bren as it was he that had been firing to the end.

- 1944 19954 — Corporal Edward Martin Pentz, 20517V, Imperial Light Horse/Kimberley Regiment, S.A.Forces, aged 26. Died of wounds, received in action, by heavy mortar fire on "B" Coy position in the area of Cardeda. He was evacuated to the Regimental RAP where he died the same day.
