Troops of "D" Coy, supported by tanks from Pretoria Regimentt, were engaging the enemy in the vicinity of the brickworks.

17752Major Jacobus Andreas Mouton, 103342V, 31 Sqdn. (South African Air Force), aged 26. Killed in action, in Liberator B24J Mk VI #KG970. Major Mouton was killed together with mid-upper gunner Lieutenant Bunce during a mission to bomb the oil storage tanks on the northbank of Danube at Giurgiu, south of Bucharest on 28th June 1944. Bomber B-24 E 970F was hit by nightfighters. Mouton and Bunce were killed, the rest of the crew managed to bail out and became Prisoners-of-War.
