Nickel-silver medallion, 38mm diameter, 3mm thick at the rim. Obverse: three stacked .303 Lee-Enfield rifles within a wreath of proteas. Reverse: the South African coat of arms above a numbered bar, with inscriptions in English, Afrikaans, and Sepedi. Ribbon 32mm wide, green with a 12mm yellow centre band, derived from historical Boer War medal ribbons.
Qualifying criteria: Officers, Warrant Officers, NCOs, Other Ranks, and Honorary Colonels who served in the Commandos and had completed at least five years' service on or after 27 April 2003, on the disbandment of the Commando system. First awarded 30 November 2011. A "COMMANDOS" clasp is available.
