Shortly after noon on 8th December, when many of the ground-staff and Headquarters personnel were congregated near the cookhouse, a sudden raid was made on the camp by a force of nearly a score of hostile aircraft, most of which were Messerschmitts 109 and 110. There was hardly time to reach the shelter of slit-trenches before the storm broke. The attack was short but severe. Thirty seconds of savage bombing and strafing from low level left the area a shambles of smoking debris. Four Rhodesians were killed - Corporal J. Smith, L/A/C.s A. G. Ednie and A. R. Meldrum, and AC.1 E. G. Lenthall.

6964Flying Officer Stephen Guye Hawksworth Fawkes, 86366, 603 Sqdn. (Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve), aged 23. Killed in action, in Spitfire MkVb P8603 was one of 11 taking part in low Ramrod Operation No. 15 against the Alcohol Distillery at Hesdin, 40 miles south east of Le Touquet. 603 Squadron acted as rear supporting wing to 8 Hurricane Fighter Bombers of 607 Squadron (Hornchurch). Over Le Touquet the Squadron were attacked by a number of Me109's and FW 190's, his Spitfire presumed to have crashed into the sea.
