8285Flying Officer John Henry Wellington Godfree, 117803, Royal Air Force, aged 48. Killed in action, the Japanese decided to ship the sick back to Java a total of 640 men, including a number of Japanese sick patients, were taken on board the 4,645-ton passenger-cargo ship Suez Maru. In two holds, 422 sick British (including 221 RAF servicemen) and 127 sick Dutch prisoners, including up to twenty stretcher cases, were accommodated. The Japanese patients filled the other two holds. Escorted by a minesweeper W-12, the Suez Maru set sail from Port Amboina but while entering the Java Sea and about 327 kilometers east of Surabaya, Java, Netherlands East Indies, the vessel was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Bonefish commanded by Cdr. Tom Hogan. The ship started to list as water poured into the holds drowning hundreds, many managed to escape the holds and swam away from the sinking ship. The Japanese mine sweeper W-12 picked up the Japanese survivors, leaving between 200 and 250 men in the sea. At 14.50, the minesweeper, W-12, under orders from Captain Kawano, opened fire, using a machine gun and rifles. Rafts and lifeboats were then rammed and sunk by the W-12. The firing did not cease till all the prisoners were killed, the minesweeper then picked up speed and sped off towards Batavia (Jakarta) at 16.30 hours.

30820Captain Amos Janse Van Rensburg, P1/39508, 2 Sqdn. (South African Air Force), aged 31. Killed in action, in North American F-51 Mustang #346. Capt A. Janse van Rensburg was the leader of a flight armed with VT fused bombs for flak suppression. After encountering little flak at their primary target, he led the flight to a village south-east of Suan, that was being used as a supply dump. They bombed, rocketed and strafed the village, and during their last strafing run Lt Parsonson, flying in the No.3 position, saw his leader's aircraft take hit's from .50 " machine gun fire. It immediately began streaming glycol and dived towards the ground, out of control. Lt Parsonson, who was between the leader and the ground, had to take evasive action to prevent a collision, and 2Lt Hansen, flying in the No.4 position, saw Capt Janse van Rensburg slumped forward over his controls. His aircraft failed to recover and dived straight into the ground.

32507Sergeant Michiel George Pienaar, 82220401BT, Att to School of Artillery (Pretoria Regiment), aged 22. Died in Freak Accident, was the commander of an Olifant tank when a tree crushed him in his commander's hatch. Pienaar's tank (call sign 13B) struck a tree of approximately 750 cm in diameter. Due to the soft ground and various veld fires in the past, the tree toppled onto the tank, crushing Pienaar in his hatch. He was still alive, but severely injured at that time. The squadron's tiffies were called upon and tried to lift the tree from the tank with a hydraulic crane. Unfortunately the tree was too heavy for the crane and it crushed Sgt. Pienaar again which caused his death.
