Born Southmead, Redditch, Ipsley, Warwickshire, England, 12/2/1873; served as a Lieutenant with the Durban Light Infantry and the 4th Regiment of Foot (The King's Own Royal Regiment) in the Anglo Boer War 1899-1902; a colonial merchant in Colombo, Ceylon by profession. Enlisted in the Rifle Brigade as a sergeant (S/7494), Planters Contingent, 12/12/1914; commissioned 7/1/1915; served with the 7th Bn (The Prince Consort's Own) Rifle Brigade in France and Belgium.
