Sapper Hakies Viljoen, as he was known, was a member of 2 Field Engineer Regiment and did his basic training in Bethlehem in the Free State as part of the January 1977 intake. He died in a shooting accident in Kwando in Namibia, less than three weeks after reporting for border duty in Oct / Nov 1977. He was initially stationed at Katima Mulilo and when told that he was to be relocated to Kwando, he verbally indicated that he did not want to go and would prefer staying in Katima. Those in charge would not adhere to his request and he was sent to Kwando. Approximately 13 days later, he was no more. God bless his soul.
