Jeffrey Schrier (ROH stories 17 & 18 Nov 2016, platoon comrade and school friend from East London), B Company, 11 Commando, January 1977 intake: the accident occurred approximately October 1977, as the Buffel was returning to base at Oshakati; four troops aboard, including a driver Schrier could not recall, plus P. de Lange (relatively unscathed) and James Doubt (severely injured); Lawrence was evacuated to 1 Military Hospital, Pretoria, but his internal injuries were too severe and he died there. Enlisted straight from school, so was 18 or 19. Already a known omission from an earlier Mike Sandham cross-check (flagged 24 Aug 2026 pass) but not yet added. Not previously on the ROH.

If I recall correctly the accident in which Lawrence was injured occurred in October 77. As reported above the accident happened as the vehicle was returning to our base in Oshakati. We were part of B Company, 11 Commando of the January 1977 intake. Four troops were in the buffel including the driver who i cannot recall. The other two troops were a certain P De Lange and James Doubt. James was also severely injured and Piet de Lange was relatively unscathed. Lawrence was evacuated to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria but the internal injuries he suffered were too severe and he did not make it. I was in the same platoon ( not section) as Lawrence. I also knew Lawrence from East London
The detail as recorded is as best as I can recall. The L of the LD was for Lawrence. He as for myself, was in B Company of 11 Commando Unit. B company was stationed in Oshakati between Sept 77 and Jan/Feb 78.
Lawrence entered the army straight from school so would have been either 18 or 19 at the time of the accident. What a shame for such a young fellow.
