Brett's Scouts enlistment book (TNA Kew images on angloboerwar.com's Brett's Scouts unit page, 'Nominal roll images' tab, 19 photographed pages A–W). Small mounted scouting force raised at Kroonstad, Orange River Colony, later in the war; commanded by Captain Brett. Recruited largely from Boer burghers who had surrendered or accepted British authority (Hendsoppers and Joiners). The unit page states no medals were issued to Brett's Scouts. The book is number / name / rank / date-of-joining; remarks are almost all blank. Stirling 1907 does not treat the unit. Crown copyright images reproduced by permission of The National Archives. Cpl 60 Alfred Herbert Jones: remarks in red 'Killed 9-5-02'. No joining date on the line. Date stored 9 May 1902. The only death marked on the 19 pages. Other remarks on the book are transfers (Howard 143 from 2nd Bn 2nd Brabant's Horse, awaiting sentence; Giles 141 from 2nd Derbyshire Regiment) or a following Post Alfred Imperial Mounted Police block of discharges — not deaths. Captain Brett himself is not a death on this roll (Tpr 19 Jan J. J. Brett is an enlistment-only line). Second reading of the red remark: Killed 9-10-01 (9 Oct 1901). First stored date 9 May 1902 (9-5-02) corrected; both readings noted.
