E. Brabant, a son of Major-General Brabant, born in Cape Colony, brave and unassuming, with striking natural military gifts which had no chance to develop. He died from wounds received at Long Valley (Ladysmith) on 3rd November 1899.' The Long Valley action led to the replacement of the ILH's temporary commander Major Karri Davies by Major A. H. M. Edwards. Frank Kelley notes he rushed forward with Charles Mullins and Robert Johnson at Elandslaagte (the two who received VCs) but was not similarly rewarded. Not a Border Horse casualty -- recorded under Imperial Light Horse, his actual regiment. Imperial Light Horse Boer War coverage on this roll remains a known gap (only Albrecht VC and Gorton had been added, from the Wagon Hill trail guide, 1 Sep 2026).
