This corps was stationed about Mafeking at the outbreak of war (a company 81 strong under Captain Cowan formed part of the garrison) and later served with Methuen in the Western Transvaal. Stirling, J. (1907), The Colonials in South Africa 1899-1902, as reproduced on the same unit page. Not previously on the ROH; Bechuanaland Rifle Volunteers did not exist as a unit in this database. Recorded in the roll as "Killed 18.10.01" (Corps No. 343). Stirling: "on the 18th 2 men were killed at Rhenosterfontein" -- this roll names both (Boyd and McCracken).
