Bechuanaland Rifles enrollment/discharge ledger (WO127-style nominal roll scan on angloboerwar.com's Bechuanaland Rifle Volunteers unit page, 'Nominal roll images' tab). This corps was stationed about Mafeking at the outbreak of war (a company 81 strong under Captain Cowan formed part of the garrison) and later served with Methuen in the Western Transvaal. Stirling, J. (1907), The Colonials in South Africa 1899-1902, as reproduced on the same unit page. Not previously on the ROH; Bechuanaland Rifle Volunteers did not exist as a unit in this database. Recorded in the roll as "Killed 4.10.01". Corps No. read as 432 (neighbouring 4 Oct deaths are Mills 430, Scheepers 431, Sephton 439; the 2 is a low-confidence last digit). Stirling: 4 men killed near Zeerust that day. NOTE: PersonNumber 45270 is a Boer Forces burgher of the same full name (Philippus Christoffel Potgieter, Marico Commando) who also died 1901-10-04 -- Zeerust is in the Marico district, so both sides of the same fight could produce a same-name same-date casualty. Treated as two different men (British colonial vs Boer commando); not merged.
