Stirling, J. (1907), The Colonials in South Africa 1899-1902: Their Record, Based on the Despatches, as reproduced on angloboerwar.com's Bethune's Mounted Infantry unit page (Overview tab). Raised at Durban, October 1899, by Major E.C. Bethune, 16th Lancers. Not previously on the ROH -- this is a preliminary pass drawing only on the unit's narrative Overview; the site's own 29+-page 'Nominal roll images' tab for this ~500-strong corps has not yet been reviewed and is a strong candidate for a dedicated future pass, the same kind of source that yielded the Border Mounted Rifles and Ashburner's Light Horse additions made the same day. Lord Kitchener's despatch of 8 May 1901, para. 5: on 9 April 1901 at Dewetsdorp, south-east Orange River Colony, Lieutenant-Colonel Monro's detachment of 150 mounted men and a pom-pom captured a Boer convoy and 83 prisoners after two hours' fighting; "Colonel Monro's casualties were 1 man killed and 4 wounded. Private G E Duffey was killed; Sergeant Major Goulding and Private Rosevean died of wounds."
Bethune's Mounted Infantry enrollment/discharge ledger (WO127-style nominal roll scan on angloboerwar.com's Bethune's Mounted Infantry unit page, 'Nominal roll images' tab, 72 photographed pages of the original bound ledger; files 07/08 and 23/24 are duplicate photographs of the same book pages). Raised at Durban, October 1899, by Major E.C. Bethune, 16th Lancers. Stirling, J. (1907), The Colonials in South Africa 1899-1902, as reproduced on the same unit page. angloboerwar.com Boer War Forum, 'Medals to Bethune's Mounted Infantry' (https://www.angloboerwar.com/forum/5-medals-and-awards/29337-medals-to-bethunes-mounted-infantry Full nominal-roll pass, 1 Sep 2026: 38 Goulding G. S. SSM 19.10.99 "Killed 10.4.01 Dewetsdorp". Stirling/Kitchener have Sergeant Major Goulding died of wounds 9 Apr 1901 — date/cause conflict flagged, not overwritten (DateDeath remains 1901-04-09, CauseDeath remains died of wounds). Rank on the roll is Squadron Sergeant Major. Stirling/Kitchener despatch of 8 May 1901: on 9 April 1901 at Dewetsdorp, Lieutenant-Colonel Monro's detachment captured a Boer convoy; Private G.E. Duffey killed, Sergeant Major Goulding and Private Rosevean died of wounds. The forum's City Coins note identifies the fight as Rietspruit (10 April; contemporary sources also use 9 and 11 April) and names 1158 Tpr G.E. Duffy, George Edward, enlisted 22 June 1900, buried Dewetsdorp.
