Plumer's Men: The Rhodesia Regiment and the Northwest Frontier during the Second South African War, 1899-1900, Robert Burrett (extensively footnoted against contemporary newspapers, the Rhodesia Regiment Roll, Rhodesian death registers, and NAZ archival sources).: killed/died of wounds in the Boer ambush and skirmish near Pont Drift and Rhodes' Drift on the Limpopo, 21-23 Oct 1899 -- the Rhodesia Regiment's first Boer War fatalities.
