Stories 1
by Rosemary Dixon Smith on 25 June 2006
Alexander O Anderson (always known as Alick) died of dysentery at Intombi Hospital Camp on 29 January 1900 during the Siege of Ladysmith. He was a trooper in the Natal Border Mounted Rifles, of which unit his stepfather William Dixon Smith was Lieutenant Quarter-Master. Alick was the son of Charlotte and Farquharson Anderson and was born in the Old Machar district of Aberdeen on 15 July 1868. The Anderson family emigrated to Natal in 1875, where Farquharson was a hotel-keeper and wheelwright; Farquharson died in 1883 and Charlotte married William Dixon Smith in 1886. Both William and Alick are buried near each other at Intombi Camp near Ladysmith.
