Research notes

SADF Wall of Remembrance (Voortrekker Monument): named on photograph "1978 SAA (Castle–Havenga, Mennigke–Wolfgang)". 1978 Army. Right column. 38th name from the top (Van Ellewee A.J.).
Joan van Ellewee (wife), ROH stories 3 Sep 2016: DOB 26 Jun 1951 (added), married 16 Dec 1977, commander at Narubis training Nama soldiers; confirms Service No 67334920 (Staande Mag/Permanent Force) and grave 3212. Her account of the accident (shrapnel off a stone, cervical vertebra) is consistent with the existing record's neck/face shrapnel from an Eland 90 live-fire demonstration.
25 Sep 2026, Unit2 service-branch sweep: the stored Secondary Unit "Air Force" was CLEARED. It was not a sub-unit, it was a service-branch word, and it CONTRADICTED this record's own Branch, "Army". Across the roll 787 records carried such a contradiction; judged against Corps and Regiment -- independent of both columns -- the evidence backed Branch 744 times and Unit2 not once. Branch is therefore kept and the contradicting word removed. Nothing is guessed: this man's branch of service is already recorded, and his sub-unit, if any, is simply not known.

Stories 1
by Joan van Ellewee (nee Marais) on 03 September 2016
Andries Johannes van Ellewee was born on 26 June 1951. We were married on 16 December 1977 and moved to Narubis, South West Africa. He was the commander on Narubis. They were preparing the Nama soldiers for independancy. During an open day there was an accident on 17 February 1978. The Eland was demonstrating shooting ranges. A part of the bomb struck a stone and came back horizontally. It struck Dries in his face and stuck into his cervical vertebra. They flew him to Katutura Hospital in Windhoek but he died on 23 February 1978. He is buried in grave no 3212 in Potchefstroom.
