Being a wealthy businessman, Johannes Carolus van Duyker soon became a target for the British troops in the Anglo Boer war. They burned down his farms and wool processing operations and booked themselves into the Central House lodges without paying their bills. During one of these skirmishes, he challenged a British officer to a 100 yards dash over steeples which race he won with his pants rolled up to just above the knees. He was lucky not to be shot. In front of the British he called himself John Charles which ploy seemed to keep him out of trouble.
