Killed in action, during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Southern Angola. During the contact, a wounded insurgent had crawled under a dead tree trunk and opened fire on Mark at a range of approximately 5 metres, mortally wounding him in the chest. Despite every effort made to save him, he succumbed to his wounds before the casevac helicopter arrived
