John Charles Niemeyer was an attorney and member of the Pretoria Commando. On the night of 9th December 1899, a British platoon of the King's Royal Rifles attacked a Boer howitzer on Surprise Hill (Vaalkop) that had been pounding Ladysmith. Members of the Pretoria Commando went to the assistance of the gun crew. John Charles Niemeyer was one of the Boer casualties from this action. He was apparently one of the first Pretoria citizens to be killed in the war and was (apparently) given a state funeral.
