Vollgraaf had been killed in action, I believe that he would have been heartbroken. Out of the nine of us who left Zeerust, three were killed, two injured and the rest came home in one piece. It was a very tough journey.
Tpr Vollgraaf was a driver of an Eland armoured car. The car was disabled in ambushed by Cubans north of a town called Ebo on 24 November 1975. They abandoned the vehicle and he was shot in the back as they were leaving the ambush area. He was evacuated to a town called Cela and taken to a hospital there. During the operation he vomited and drowned from the vomit. His body was returned to South Africa and was buried in Upington.
