Named in Whittall, With Botha and Smuts in Africa: as “Fatty” Jones, brigade-major to Brig.-Gen. Beves in German South-West Africa; later killed in France while leading his South African Infantry battalion in the Delville Wood fighting (Whittall). ROH CauseDeath places the fatal shell at Bernafay Wood, 11 July 1916 — immediately before the brigade entered Delville Wood.

Beves brigade-major (GSWA); killed Bernafay/Delville period, Jul 1916
W. Whittall (With Botha and Smuts in Africa) knew him first as brigade-major to Brigadier-General Beves during the German South-West Africa campaign, and records that he was later killed in France while gallantly leading his South African Infantry battalion in the attack on Delville Wood.
Contemporary South African accounts place his death on 11 July 1916 at Bernafay Wood (shell splinter as he left his dugout), while the 4th SAI was supporting operations on the Somme immediately before the brigade’s assault on Delville Wood.
