Octagonal bronze medal, 38mm diameter. Obverse: a faceted nine-pointed star (representing South Africa's nine provinces) charged within a laurel wreath. Reverse: the national coat of arms in relief, medal number stamped below; nickel-silver suspender at the upper rim. Ribbon 32mm wide: alternating national-flag blue (5mm), white (2mm), and red (6mm) bands, separated by a central 3mm black band and bordered by 1.5mm gold bands.
Qualifying criteria: All ranks, for participation in military campaigns or operations not significant enough to warrant a dedicated campaign medal. Minimum one day's service qualifies (official visits require at least 34 continuous or interrupted days). May be awarded posthumously.
